Fortunately, voters in the Untied States elected a pro-choice President, Barack Obama, in 2008. However, the United States Congress does not have a pro-choice majority in either house. Furthermore, we will be living with President Bush's legacy for years to come thanks to his appointment of two anti-choice justices on the United States Supreme Court. State legislatures across the country have enacted 335 anti-choice laws since 1995. Over the last decade, access to abortion services has steadily declined in Massachusetts and across the US. While abortion is legal, barriers to reproductive health services make it virtually impossible for many low-income women, women of color, and young women to get the care they need. Furthermore, anti-choice forces have actively opposed initiatives that would reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, such as expanding access to emergency contraception and comprehensive sex education.

We helped to elect the first pro-choice legislature in state history in 2004 and the largest pro-choice legislative majority in 2008. In 2007, we worked with our allies to pass the Buffer Zone Bill, creating a fixed, 35-foot area around reproductive health facilities to protect patients and staff. In 2003, we authored the Emergency Contraception Bill, which became law in 2005, making emergency contraception more available at pharmacies and requiring hospital emergency rooms to offer it to rape survivors. When NARAL was first founded, the acronym stood for the"National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws." Later, it changed to the"National Abortion Rights Action League" and then later to the "National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League." In January 2003, our national organization changed its name from NARAL to NARAL Pro-Choice America. At that point in time, the national organization chose to stop spelling out the acronym. Here in Massachusetts, our named evolved from MORAL (Massachusetts Organization for the Repeal of Abortion Laws) to Mass Choice to Mass NARAL to our current name, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. |
