Political Director
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts (an affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is the state’s leading advocate for privacy and a woman’s right to choose. The organization’s mission is to develop and sustain a grassroots constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children and choosing safe, legal, accessible abortion.
 
The Political Director, reporting directly to the Executive Director, is responsible for administering the organization’s electoral and legislative programs.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and implement strategies to elect pro-choice candidates in targeted races. Strategies may include production and distribution of campaign materials, voter identification and get-out-the-vote phone banks, and mobilizing volunteers to work directly on campaigns.
• Develop and implement strategies to pass pro-choice legislation and defeat anti-choice legislation. Educate and lobby legislators on reproductive health and family planning issues. Track all relevant activity and serve as the organization’s representative on Beacon Hill.
• Manage Political Committee. Recruit and support committee members. Facilitate endorsement process of state and local candidates.
• Produce statewide voters’ guide in election years with ratings of candidates running in all 200 state legislative districts.
• Maintain electoral and lobbying records and file all relevant reports with the state.
• Manage the Choice Lobby Network, a statewide group of volunteer lobbyists. Mobilize members at key times to communicate with their legislators.
• Recruit, mobilize, and supervise volunteers and interns participating in the political program.
• Work with coalition partners to coordinate political strategies and messages.
• Serve as a spokesperson at select community meetings, events, and house parties.
• Participate in team environment to develop strategy and contribute to overall effectiveness of organization.
• Attend all major organizational events.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
• B.A. with demonstrated interest in community organizing and reproductive rights.
• 3 - 5 years electoral campaign, legislative, and/or advocacy experience, Massachusetts preferred.
• Strong commitment to diversity. Experience working with and building collaborative relationships with diverse populations a plus.
• Highly organized and detail oriented; able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• High level of computer literacy.
• Excellent communication skills, including writing, proofreading, and public speaking.
• Willingness to work some nights and occasional weekends; statewide travel sometimes necessary.

Internship Positions:
Communications and Event Planning Internship (Fall 2008)
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts seeks a Communications and Event Planning Intern for the fall of 2008. Learn about the day-to-day activities of a professional non-profit development and communications program. Support the Development and Communications team in its various tasked as outlined below. Perfect for a student interested in non-profit fundraising, communications, or special event planning.

We are looking for candidates that possess the following:
• A commitment to reproductive rights and the NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts mission
• A commitment to diversity
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• An ability to work well independently and as part of a team
• A willingness to learn, flexibility, and reliability
 
Responsibilities:

Event Planning
• Coordinate volunteers for sponsorship phone banks and invitation mailing; learn necessary skills
• Assist coordination of silent auction
• Assist in soliciting donations
• Seek press for event
• Assist with event follow-up
 
Communications
• Review the latest online communications techniques to strengthen our email and web programs
• Help develop materials for our direct response marketing programs (direct mail, telemarketing, and online fundraising)
• Research foundations for grant opportunities
• Help prepare the Fall 2008 edition of The Voice For Choice, our bi-annual newsletter
• Assist with donor acknowledgments and member correspondence
 
Other Tasks
• Data entry, filing, and other relevant projects
 
Time Commitment/Compensation:
Approximately 12 to 15 hours per week (flexible). This is an unpaid internship. Travel expenses will be compensated up to $100.

Paid Pro-Choice Campus Organizing Internship (Fall 2008, Spring 2009)
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is seeking a dedicated pro-choice student to fill the position of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Campus Representative.  The Campus Representative will act as a liaison between the organization and student body, as well as the organization and the school’s community.  NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts will provide organizing materials and supervisory support via regular phone calls, emails and occasional campus visits; however, the Campus Representative will mainly work independently on his/her campus and/or surrounding community.
 
Responsibilities
• Participate in the Campus Representative Training Program held in the organization’s Boston office.
• Organize a campaign around one reproductive rights issue that is relevant to your campus and also relates to prevention of unintended pregnancy and/or sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.  The campaign must include at least one event.
• Assist NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts in their efforts to promote specific pieces of pro-choice legislation or to oppose anti-choice attacks at the state level.
• Register students to vote in preparation for the 2008 election.
• Table at five campus and/or community events throughout the school year in order to recruit people to sign up for our email alerts (Choice Action Network).
• Work in coalition with other campus or community organizations in order to engage diverse populations.
• Participate in national days of action.
• Participate in regular supervisory phone calls with contact at NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.
• Complete monthly forms to track campus organizing progress.
• Assist in recruiting and training your replacement at the close of the school year.

• An interest in student life and an understanding of the campus’s political climate
• Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking
• The ability to work  independently with regular (but long distance) supervision
• A willingness to learn, flexibility, and reliability
 
Time Commitment/Compensation
• 8-12 hours per week
• Projects may require evening and weekend availability
• $100 monthly stipend and course credit available
