Abortion
In 1973, the Supreme Court guaranteed American women the right to choose abortion in its landmark decision Roe v. Wade. Since that time, the anti-choice movement has worked furiously to dismantle it – with the ultimate goal of overturning the decision altogether. Anti-choice activists are working hard in state legislatures, the courts, and Congress to take away our rights.
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is dedicated to protecting the right to safe, legal abortion in the Commonwealth. If you're looking for more information on abortion, see the fact sheets below. If you're looking for abortion services, see our online Guide to Abortion Care in Massachusetts.
Fact Sheets
Massachusetts, like the rest of the nation, has experienced an overall decline in abortion providers in both clinics and hospitals in recent years. There are also significant – and growing – regional disparities in access to abortion care, with the majority of providers concentrated in the Metro-Boston area.
On November 13, 2007, Governor Deval Patrick signed into law the Buffer Zone Bill which establishes a fixed 35-foot buffer zone around the entrances and driveways of all reproductive health facilities in Massachusetts.
For years, we’ve heard the stories: A woman thinks she might be pregnant by accident. Looking for counseling about her options and access to appropriate medical care, she stumbles across an anti-choice "crisis pregnancy center”(CPC) that advertises free services. Once there, she’s shamed with extreme rhetoric, deceived by medical falsehoods, and delayed in getting health services by CPC staff and volunteers whose goal is to prevent her from considering abortion, regardless of her circumstances.
