On August 24, 2006, the FDA approved the emergency contraceptive Plan B for over-the-counter sales to women 18 and older. Women under 18 will still need a prescription.
In 2005, Massachusetts became the 8th state to offer increased access to Emergency Contraception (EC) at pharmacies and emergency rooms. EC pharmacy access under the Massachusetts law is still in effect. It allows trained pharmacists to offer expanded access to EC for women who are not eligible for over-the-counter access, including women under 18 or those without ID. The law also makes EC available to all rape survivors who enter emergency rooms in Massachusetts hospitals.
