Protect and Elect Campaign

Thanks to you, we have maintained a pro-choice legislature in every election cycle since 2004, when we elected our first majority in both chambers. Your support and activism allowed us to make a crucial difference in pivotal elections.

Most recently, on November 2, 2010, we elected champions of choice to five statewide offices and kept our pro-choice legislature. This was a tremendous victory given the volatile nature of this past election cycle. Many of our Beacon Hill allies had to withstand bruising attacks, and more than half of our pro-choice legislative seats were in play.

We are proud to have endorsed an historic line-up of pro-choice constitutional officers (Governor Patrick, Lieutenant Governor Murray, Attorney General Coakley, Auditor Bump, and Treasurer Grossman). We salute these leaders along with an even more pro-choice state Senate – 29 out of 40 seats.

But even as we rejoice in our gains, we are taking stock of what it means to have a much smaller majority – and thus fewer pro-choice voices – in the state House of Representatives. And we are constantly thinking about how to win these seats back.

Next year, we will again have a unique opportunity to increase our pro-choice margins – especially in the House – to more accurately reflect the Commonwealth's support of a woman's right to make personal, private medical decisions without government interference. Please check back as we continue to update you, our members and supporters, on our 2012 Protect and Elect program!
