Crisis Pregnancy Centers

For years, we’ve heard the stories: A woman thinks she might be pregnant. While looking for counseling about her options and access to appropriate medical care, she stumbles across an anti-choice "crisis pregnancy center” that advertises free services. Once there, she is shamed with extremist rhetoric, deceived by medical falsehoods, and delayed in getting health services by crisis pregnancy center staff and volunteers whose goal is to prevent her from considering abortion—regardless of her circumstances.

What is a Crisis Pregnancy Center?

Crisis pregnancy centers have been generally defined as being centers or clinics which (1) dishonestly purport to provide education and counseling services and free or fee-based pregnancy-related services such as pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, (2) provide misleading, incomplete, or proven-to-be-false information related to sexuality, abortion, abortion-related risks, and birth control, and (3) will not perform abortions or provide abortion referrals.

Crisis pregnancy centers do not provide real reproductive health services. Instead, their goal is to convince women NOT to get an abortion and to delay time-sensitive abortion care.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Massachusetts

Crisis pregnancy centers are prevalent across the country, with more than 4000 locations nationwide. Crisis pregnancy centers are unregulated, and they operate on low fiscal budgets with the help of anti-choice volunteers. Some crisis pregnancy centers, like the ones in Massachusetts, receive federal funding to support their outreach.

In 2011, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts discovered 32 crisis pregnancy centers operating in the Commonwealth during an in depth, undercover investigation. Crisis pregnancy centers outnumber real women's health clinics 3:1.

We initiated our investigation of crisis pregnancy centers after the Commonwealth began issuing "Choose Life” license plates, which created a new revenue source for these anti-choice facilities.

The Certified Truth Campaign

At NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, we believe that every woman has the right to be informed with accurate medical information regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing safe, legal and accessible abortion.

The unacceptable presence of crisis pregnancy centers in our state led us to launch our Certified Truth Campaign—an education campaign to equip women with the tools they need to tell the difference between real healthcare and ideologically-driven crisis pregnancy centers.
