The cost of an abortion depends on:

  • How many weeks the pregnancy is. In general, the more weeks, the higher the cost.
  • If the abortion is a surgical or "aspiration” abortion or medication abortion (see What to Expect). The cost can be different for the different kinds of abortion.
  • If you have the ‘minimum’ services or choose extra services. For example, you may be able to pay extra to get medicine that makes you very sleepy during the abortion (see What to Expect).
  • If the abortion is at a clinic or doctor’s office or is in a hospital (see Types of Providers). Abortions at clinics and doctor’s offices usually cost between $400 and $900; abortions in hospitals usually cost much more.
  • If you get the Rhogam shot. If your blood is ‘Rh negative’ you should get the Rhogam shot when you have an abortion (see What to Expect). This shot usually costs extra.

When you call a clinic or doctor’s office or hospital about an abortion, ask exactly how much the abortion will cost.
