Usually, payment for an abortion is made before the abortion is done.

Using Insurance
Your health insurance may pay for your abortion.

  • MassHealth (Medicaid) and Commonwealth Care can pay for abortions in Massachusetts.6
  • Most private health insurance – including all Commonwealth Choice plans (see below)  - pay for abortions, but you should ask your insurance company to make sure your health insurance will pay for an abortion.7

Some doctors, clinics and hospitals do not accept certain types of insurance for payment. You should ask the clinic, doctor’s office or hospital if you can use your insurance.

Not Using Insurance

Many women pay for an abortion themselves. They use cash, debit or credit cards, or a money order. When you call a clinic, doctor’s office or hospital about an abortion, ask exactly what kind of payment they accept.
