Public Health Insurance in Massachusetts
There are two types of public health insurance in Massachusetts: MassHealth (Medicaid) and Commonwealth Care.

MassHealth (Medicaid)
MassHealth is a public health insurance program for some low-income Massachusetts residents, including some legal immigrants to the United States.  MassHealth generally pays for abortion, but there are limits on where you can go to get an abortion paid for by MassHealth, so be sure to ask the clinic, doctor’s office or hospital if they take MassHealth.

The fastest way to apply for MassHealth, especially if you are already pregnant, is to contact the MassHealth Customer Service Center at (800) 841-2900 or download the application.

Commonwealth Care
Commonwealth Care is a low-cost or no-cost health insurance program for some Massachusetts residents who have a low income but are not eligible to get MassHealth.  Commonwealth Care generally pays for abortion, but there might be limits on where you can go to get an abortion paid for by your Commonwealth Care plan because not every clinic, doctor’s office or hospital contracts with these plans, so be sure to ask if they take your health insurance.

If you have Commonwealth Care, you can also call (877-623-6765) to find out where they will pay for an abortion.

To get an application for Commonwealth Care, call the Commonwealth Care Customer Service line at (877) MA-ENROLL (877-623-6765) (TTY: 877-623-7773).

Commonwealth Choice
Commonwealth Choice is a set of private health insurance plans for certain adult Massachusetts residents who are not eligible for MassHealth or Commonwelath Care and do not have access to health insurance through their employer, school or family.  Commonwealth Choice plans generally pay for abortion, but there might be limits on where you can go to get an abortion paid for by your Commonwealth Choice plan because not every clinic, doctor’s office or hospital contracts with these plans, so be sure to ask if they take your health insurance.

For questions about Commonwealth Choice, to apply for Commonwealth Choice, and to find out if a particular Commonwealth Choice plan will pay for abortion, call Commonwealth Choice at (617) 933-3140 or toll-free at (877) MA-ENROLL (877-623-6765) (TTY: 877-623-7773).
