Fall 2009 - Budget Update: Reproductive Health Programs Maintained!
During these trying economic times, hard decisions had to be made at the State House around the 2010 budget. But thanks to all of your phone calls, letters, and emails during the budget process, both family planning and teen pregnancy prevention funding endured only minor cuts. These line items saw reductions of only 15%, despite larger slashes in the original proposed budget, which cut family planning by about 75% and teen pregnancy prevention by about 20%. In addition, we were able to keep language affirming the Office of Health Equity (within the Executive Office of Health and Human Services) to lead and coordinate efforts to eliminate health disparities throughout the state. NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts thanks the Legislature for understanding the importance of maintaining critical reproductive health-related line items in these tough financial times. Funding for family planning and teen pregnancy prevention programs is crucial to promoting the health and well-being of women and families in the Commonwealth, particularly in underserved communities.
Thank you for your activism. This victory would not have been possible without all of your hard work! For more information about the legislative work of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, please contact our Political Director, Melody Hugo, at melody@prochoicemass.org or 617-556-8800 x16.
