Federal Abortion Ban Found Unconstitutional
Synopsis: New York District Court finds "Partial-Birth" Abortion Ban, signed earlier in the year by President Bush, unconstitutional.

Federal Abortion Ban Found Unconstitutional Boston MA-Women’s health advocates won an important victory today with the federal court ruling that the so-called “Partial-Birth” Abortion Ban Act is unconstitutional. Echoing an earlier ruling by the Supreme Court, U.S. District Judge Richard Casey based his ruling on the law’s lack of an exception to preserve a woman’s life and health.
This ruling is a victory, but our work is not done. Threats to women’s rights to privacy and choice are greater today than at any time since Roe v. Wade. A second term for George W. Bush could spell the end to the protections guaranteed by Roe. Since his earliest days in office, Bush has worked to curtail women’s freedoms. He has limited access to birth control and responsible sex education that can help reduce unintended pregnancies. He signed the first-ever ban on safe medical procedures. And he has consistently nominated anti-choice ideologues to the federal bench, foreshadowing the kind of jurists he’d select for the Supreme Court.
These threats underscore what a tenuous hold we have on reproductive freedom and the need to do all we can to protect our rights.
