NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Publishes Pro-Choice Voter’s Guide; Mobilizes Pro-Choice Voters to Make a Difference in State Races Boston, MA – The 2004 NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Pro-Choice Voter’s Guide, containing choice ratings and endorsements in the Commonwealth’s 200 state legislative races, has been sent via postal and electronic mail to nearly 20,000 pro-choice supporters across the state in advance of the September 14 Primary Election. As the state’s leading advocate for reproductive freedom, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts seeks to educate voters about candidates’ positions on choice and encourage them to vote on Primary Day.
“With many legislative races being decided by a few hundred votes, pro-choice women and men should know that their vote can make a difference,” said Melissa Kogut, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. “By educating our members about where candidates stand on reproductive freedom, they’ll have the information they need to make informed decisions.”
The NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Political Action Committee invited candidates in state legislative races to complete questionnaires gauging positions on issues ranging from access to Emergency Contraception (EC) to restrictions on accessible abortion services. The PAC issued endorsements and candidate ratings based upon evaluation of questionnaires or voting histories on past choice issues including the Contraceptives Coverage Bill (2002) and the Buffer Zone Bill (2000).
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts has also spent additional resources to bolster four specific campaigns where the candidate’s position on choice is a defining issue. Targeted campaigns include John Keenan (7th Essex), Melissa Murgo (16th Worcester), Avi Green (26th Middlesex), and Rep. Doug Petersen (8th Essex). In the Keenan and Murgo districts, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts has identified hundreds of pro-choice voters who will be contacted again via phone and mail and encouraged to get to the polls on September 14th.
