Statement of Melissa Kogut, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts on Justice O’Connor Resignation
Pro-choice Massachusetts residents mobilize in support of a moderate consensus nominee.
Boston, MA – “Throughout her tenure, Justice O’Connor has been one of the “swing” votes on the Supreme Court, part of the razor-thin majority that has kept Roe v. Wade from being dismantled. This vacancy provides President Bush with an opportunity to unite the country behind a consensus nominee. We hope he will follow the path of Republican and Democratic presidents before him and consult with members of both parties to identify a consensus nominee with broad support. Americans deserve a nomination process that keeps the Supreme Court independent, not a political power grab that will divide the country. But if President Bush chooses the course of confrontation and far right extremism, we’re ready fight to protect individual freedom and personal privacy.
We have already begun to mobilize thousands of supporters across the Commonwealth, as part of our Choose Justice campaign, to conduct petition drives, contact Senators Kennedy and Kerry, and distribute information on the significance of a Supreme Court vacancy and the need for a moderate justice who respects this country’s long tradition of personal freedom and personal responsibility.”
