Response to Governor’s Veto of Emergency Contraception Bill

Posted: 07/29/2005

Synopsis:Statement of Melissa Kogut on Veto of Emergency Contraception Bill by Governor Romney.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 25, 2005

Statement of Melissa Kogut,
Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts
in Response to Governor’s Veto of EC Bill

Boston, MA-“We are extremely disappointed and frankly perplexed to learn that the governor has vetoed the Massachusetts Emergency Contraception Bill. When he ran for governor, he made a commitment to support improved access to emergency contraception (EC). Today he has not only let down the women and families of the Commonwealth but he has not kept his word.

Let’s keep in mind that we’re talking about birth control that the governor has opposed today. Emergency contraception is a contraceptive method approved by the FDA to prevent pregnancy after rape or unprotected sex. It is not the same as RU-486 and will not cause an abortion.

Better access to EC means fewer unintended pregnancies and therefore, fewer abortions. Reducing the rate of unintended pregnancy and the need for abortion are important public health goals.

The good news is that there is overwhelming support of the Emergency Contraception Bill in both the Senate and the House and we urge legislators to override the governor’s veto.”
