Romney Abandons Opt Out Plan for Private Hospitals
“Over the last two days, Massachusetts citizens, legislators and Attorney General Tom Reilly have come down firmly on the side of rape survivors and, under pressure, Governor Romney was forced to join.
We are encouraged that Governor Romney has abandoned plans to allow private hospitals to opt out of providing emergency contraception to rape survivors. However, the people of the Commonwealth won’t forget that the Governor actively tried to block improved access to this birth control method and it took the legislature to override his veto.
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts mobilized its 20,000 members across the state and flooded the Governor’s office with phone calls and we will continue our work to make sure that rape survivors are not forgotten as the new emergency contraception law goes into effect.”
