Group Urges Elected Officials to Ensure Next Budget Adequately Supports Prevention Programs Boston, MA – NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts commends Governor Deval Patrick’s decision to use stimulus money to provide stopgap funding for proven, cost-effective family planning programs, which will support much-needed care at an important time. At the same time, we urge the Legislature to ensure that these prevention services receive sufficient resources in the upcoming budget. We applaud the Governor for recognizing that preventative care is important to the Commonwealth and must be funded and that core safety net services must be not be allowed to lapse in these troubled times. Thanks to his leadership on this issue, women and men will continue to have access to critical health services, which will help to reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, and breast and cervical cancer in our state. We remain concerned that comprehensive family planning services could be drastically cut by as much as 70% in the FY10 budget. This would endanger vital programs that help the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable residents obtain essential reproductive health care. NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is the state's leading advocate for privacy and a woman's right to choose. # # #
