Joint Statement on the Massachusetts Special Election for the Open U.S. Senate Seat

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, and Andrea Miller, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, issued the following joint statement regarding the role of choice in the special election for the U.S. Senate slated for December 8.

"Rep. Mike Capuano and Attorney General Martha Coakley are fully pro-choice and, in their respective elected positions, have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to a woman's right to choose. We commend both of these leaders for taking a strong stand against the inclusion of extreme anti-choice language in the Senate version of health-reform bill that would go far beyond the status quo of banning federal funding for abortion services. The Stupak language would block women from using their own money to buy the insurance plan that includes coverage for abortion. It is reassuring to voters in the Commonwealth to see two leaders stand up against such a new and extreme infringement on a woman's right to choose."
