NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Hosts Inaugural Men for Choice Event

Boston, MA – On Monday, February 10th, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts will host its inaugural Men for Choice event at 49 Social from 6pm-8pm. Men for Choice is a celebration of the 41st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the decision that established a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. The event celebrates the men who relentlessly advocate for preserving a woman’s right to choose, and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is honoring State Representatives James O’Day (D-Worcester) and Carl Sciortino (D-Medford) for their leadership on pro-choice legislation.

"Choice is often framed as a woman’s issue, but it is really a family issue,” said Megan Amundson, Executive Director for NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. "Men have just as much stake in protecting access to reproductive health care as women do. And we thank those men who have stood with us to protect and expand that access.”

While Massachusetts is often considered a progressive state, it is not a leader on women’s health care access. According to NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Who Decides? report, which grades every state on accessibility of reproductive health care based on laws and regulations, Massachusetts receives only a B-.

"Despite its reputation, Massachusetts lags behind many other states in guaranteeing women access to reproductive health care,” said Amundson. "Young women and low-income women disproportionately bear the burden of decades of anti-choice policies being passed and implemented in the Commonwealth. They are the ones who struggle most to access basic health care today. We need more leaders like Representatives O’Day and Sciortino who will stand up for health care access.”

In Massachusetts today, young women and low-income women face a number of systemic barriers to accessing basic health care. In addition, young adults aren’t guaranteed access to medically accurate sexual education, incarcerated women are being shackled during pregnancy and labor, and archaic statutes on the books ban contraception for unmarried women and ban abortion outright.

Representative Jim O-Day has championed the Healthy Youth bill to ensure that schools in Massachusetts that teach sex education provide students with medically accurate, age appropriate information.

"It’s a pleasure to be acknowledged by NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts for my efforts to pass the Healthy Youth bill,” said Representative Jim O’Day. "This bill is a priority for me because young people in Massachusetts deserve to be taught comprehensive, medically accurate, and age appropriate sex education so that they have the tools they need to stay healthy.”

Representative Carl Sciortino sponsored and fought for the Massachusetts Buffer Zone, a bill passed in 2007 that established a 35-foot, content-neutral buffer zone around the entrance to reproductive-health clinics.

"I’m so pleased to be honored at NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts’ first Men for Choice event,” said Representative Carl Sciortino. "I fought to pass the Buffer Zone bill because there was a clear need to protect the safety of not only women accessing care at reproductive health clinics, but also the employees who work there. Massachusetts has a history of violence at health care facilities, and this law has been proven to be very effective.”

Massachusetts elected its first pro-choice legislature in 2004. Since then, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts has fought to retain that majority, which is threatened in every election. The House of Representatives currently has only an 8-vote pro-choice majority. This slim margin makes the work that pro-choice champions like Representatives O’Day and Sciortino do even more vital so that Massachusetts can continue to move toward the goal of ensuring that all women have equal access to basic health care.
