Neighborhood Association Denies Anti-Choice Boston Center Pregnancy Choices Support for a Conditional Use Permit to Operate Ultrasounds in Boston

Boston, MA – Last night, the Leather District Neighborhood Association unanimously voted to not support a request by a local so-called "crisis pregnancy center” to obtain a conditional use permit allowing an ultrasound machine on site.

Crisis pregnancy centers are a threat to women seeking pregnancy counseling in Massachusetts and across the country. These facilities pose as legitimate reproductive health clinics, but use misinformation and deceptive tactics to delay or prevent women from accessing abortion care. The 32 crisis pregnancy centers in Massachusetts often imply in their advertising that they provide abortion and other reproductive health services, including free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and options counseling. They tout medical falsehoods—for example, claims that abortion causes breast cancer, future infertility, and mental illness—in order to scare women out of choosing abortion. Currently, 10 crisis pregnancy centers in Massachusetts provide free ultrasounds and do not disclose that the ultrasounds offered are non-diagnostic, limited in scope, and medically unnecessary. They target low income women and women of color by advertising free medical services and operating in underserved communities throughout the Commonwealth.

"This vote is a victory for women in Boston,” said Megan Amundson, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. "Facilities like Boston Center Pregnancy Choices exist solely to impose their anti-choice ideology onto unsuspecting women. In their quest to use ultrasound images to shame and coerce women out of choosing abortion, so-called "crisis pregnancy centers” even delay critical prenatal care for women who choose to continue their pregnancy. We look forward to working with Mayor Walsh and the Boston City Council to advance policies that will limit the impact these facilities have on women in Boston.”

A representative from Mayor Marty Walsh’s office and Boston City Councilor-At-Large Ayanna Pressley spoke at the Leather District Neighborhood Association meeting in opposition of Boston Center Pregnancy Choices. Mayor Walsh is well aware of the harmful effects of misinformation spread by these centers and stated, "I believe, and my record shows, that women should have access to safe and truthful reproductive healthcare. Crisis pregnancy centers are known to provide medically inaccurate information and facilities that fail to provide honest information to women about their health care options have no place in our communities."

"Every woman should have access to safe and medically accurate health care services including pregnancy and abortion related services,” said Councilor Ayanna Pressley. "Crisis pregnancy centersuse personal ideology and misinformation to deceive women seeking care for unintended pregnancies.I will work with my colleagues on the Boston City Council, Mayor Walsh, and NARAL to prevent any more of these facilities from opening in our city.”
