NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Statement in Response to Governor Bakerís Announcement of Supreme Judicial Court Nominees
Boston, MA Ė This week, Governor Charlie Baker announced his picks to fill three upcoming vacancies on the Supreme Judicial Court, the Commonwealthís highest court. Governor Baker has repeatedly refused to consider an abortion litmus test for his nominees to the SJC. In response, Christian Miron, deputy director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, issued the following statement:
"NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is deeply troubled by Governor Bakerís refusal to establish a clear abortion litmus test for his nominees to the Supreme Judicial Court. Protecting the constitutional right to abortion is absolutely critical to womenís ability to determine their families, their lives and their destinies. Governor Bakerís refusal to guarantee protection for abortion access at the highest court in Massachusetts places him squarely out of touch with the values and needs of the Commonwealth. He calls himself pro-choice, but his failure to stand up for the basic rights of Massachusetts women tells a different story.
"In a matter of days, the United States Supreme Court is expected to issue its opinion on Whole Womenís Health v Hellerstedt, the most important abortion case to go before the Supreme Court since Roe v Wade. This case drives home the unfortunate reality that the right to access abortion care is still very dependent on the courts and the judges who are selected to serve on them. In choosing the justices of the Supreme Judicial Court, Governor Baker and the Governorís Council wield the power to affirm or deny women in Massachusetts one of their most basic rights. NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, along with our members across the Commonwealth, will continue to work to guarantee that every justice Governor Baker appoints to the Supreme Judicial Court will consistently uphold our stateís constitution and the rights of Massachusetts women.
"We look forward to learning more about the views Governor Bakerís nominees hold on the constitutional right to abortion as the confirmation process moves forward.Ē
