NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Statement in Response to Governor Baker’s Most Recent Supreme Judicial Court Nominee, Scott Kafker

Gov. Baker’s Fifth and Final Nominee to SJC Must Uphold State Constitutional Right to Abortion

Boston, MA –Today, Governor Charlie Baker announced the nomination of Judge Scott Kafker to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. This nomination, the fifth of his tenure as governor, will fill the final vacancy currently expected on the seven-member court. In response, Rebecca Hart Holder, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, issued the following statement:

"The Trump administration is trying to systematically eliminatethe right to abortion using the judicial system. President Trump has already taken the first step to overturn Roe v. Wade by installing anti-choice Justice Neil Gorsuch on the U.S. Supreme Court. It is beyond imperative to ensure that the Commonwealth’s highest court will resist the Trump administration's anti-choice agenda and uphold the Massachusetts state constitutional right to abortion, no matter what happens to Roe v. Wade.

"Protecting Bay Staters’ fundamental right to access reproductive health care hinges on ensuring that the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts will uphold the right to choose for Massachusetts women. NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts and our 10,000 member activists have secured the guarantee that Gov. Baker’s previous four judicial nominees will uphold the state constitutional right to abortion, and our expectation is that Gov. Baker will continue to appoint justices who uphold this right.

"No person can fully participate in the social, economic and political life of the nation without the ability to decide when and whether to become a parent. NARAL Pro Choice Massachusetts will mobilize our membership to protect the constitutional right to abortion and ensure that Bay Staters can determine their families, their lives, and their destinies.”
