NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Statement on the Murder of Dr. George Tiller
“We are deeply saddened by the murder of Dr. George Tiller, a courageous physician who dedicated his life to protecting women’s lives and health and ensuring that the right to make personal, private decisions about pregnancy and parenthood is a meaningful reality not simply a hollow promise. We mourn the loss of a true hero. Our hearts go out to his family in this time of terrible tragedy,” said Andrea Miller, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. “Even as we grieve,” Miller continued, “we salute the brave women and men in the Commonwealth and across this nation who work tirelessly – often at great personal sacrifice and tremendous personal risk – to ensure that women have access to safe, legal abortion care. Our message to them is simple: Thank you. The pro-choice majority stands with you.” “Not only has Dr. Tiller’s life been tragically taken, but God’s house has been desecrated by this heinous crime,” added the Reverend Anne C. Fowler, Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jamaica Plain and Chair of the NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Board of Directors. “As a person of faith, I call upon all of those committed to justice and compassion to come together to witness our solidarity with women everywhere who face difficult choices and those who care for them,” Rev. Fowler concluded.
On June 9, 2009, Dr. Tiller's family announced that his clinic would close permanently. Read a statement from NARAL Pro-Choice America.
